Small classes on olive oil: taste and sensory evaluation

A number of people have asked me about the possibility of my holding small one-day classes on the basic theory and practice of tasting olive oil. As I result I have held a number of such events in the last year and plan to continue to do so on demand. Numbers are kept to a minimum of six or eight and classes are held either in London or Brighton. Please email me on jridgway@oliveoil.org.uk if you would be interested in attending such classes.

The next classes will be held in September.  No dates have yet been set so if you would like to attend a class and have a preference for a specific day please let me know.

New Olive Oil Almanac:

I have been working on a new Olive Oil Almanac which will build up over time and which will be available to members of the new Olive Trail Olive Oil Club (see www.oliveoilclubs.com for more details). In due course individual pages or the whole almanac may be available to others. Please email me at jridgway@oliveoil.org.uk if you are interested.

New Product News:

This is a new section which I have decided to add to my website for everyone who is interested in good artisan-produced food. On my travels I sometimes come across foods which are so good I want to tell everyone about them and this is one way of doing so.

You will not find olive oils listed here as I do not endorse particular oils. Nor do I endorse the products that appear here but they are products which I have enjoyed and which I think are worth seeking out. I hope that you will enjoy them too.

Rich traditions of the Marche in London

A new portfolio of produce from the Marche in north eastern Italy has been put together by Giuliano Gnagnatti and Giovanni Tasco of Marche UK.  There are lovely pastas, olive oils, cheeses, wines and sweetmeats all from traditional artisan producers who are vastly proud of their products.  The range offers a real taste of this unspoilt and not very well  known region of Italy.

O!live

A wonderful new range of olive based products has been developed by the Greek company Gaea. There are food items such as some excellent olives oils, black and green olives of various kinds and delicious chocolate and hazelnut spreads and costmetic items such as body lotions, champoos, soaps and cleansers. The packaging is elegant and cosmopolitan. The range is currently on sale in a dedicated "shop" in the department store Attica in the centre of Athens. There are plans to offer the new range in the UK either through a similar in-store "shop" or direct to the specialist food trade by the end of the year.

The Healing Powers of Olive Oil

This is a new book by Cal Orey, author of the successful book "The Healing Powers of Vinegar". She describes the latest medical research from leading experts on the many benefits of olive oil such as inhibiting breast and colorectal cancer, preventing diabetes, reducing cholesterol to lower your chances for heart disease, speeding weight loss, lowering blood pressure, promoting longer life, soothing diaper rash, cleaning your house, reducing shedding in pets and much more!

Wild Game Products from Jaen

One of the "finds" of a recent visit to Andalucia was a wonderful range of traditional game produce from Carnocas de Aldeaquemada SL. Under the brand name Arte Monte the range includes an excellent dry cured deer sausage with a rich and spicy flavour and a marvellously succulent texture. Equally good was a deer choriso with a really smoky paprika taste. I also sampled a delicious wild boar pate from a range which includes partridge, wild duck and deer pates. For the really adventurous there was a wild deer confit in olive oil. All the products are hand made in state-of-the-art premises. For more information: artemonte@wanadoo.es.

Green Gold - The story of Lebanese Olive Oil

Green Gold: The Story of Lebansese Olive OilThis is a lovely new coffee-table book about a region that it not at all well known to the outside world. Here is how the publishers describe the book:

"It is a fascinating account of sustainable development and a personal narrative of discovery and deep affection. Join the author on her journey to the traditional olive groves carpeting Lebanon's countryside and meet the producers who have been pruning, picking and pressing olvies for generations. Fine out more about ancient myths and legents and enjoy striking photos of gnarled tree trunks, verdant hill, flower covered olive groves and weather worn faces of men and women who work the groves".

It is on sale in the UK at Olives et Al, O&Co and Petersham Nurseries. For sales elsewhere contact the publishers:

• The Olive Oil Companion

You may see a book by me 'The Olive Oil Companion' published by Apple Press in October 2003. This is not my latest book. It is an identical re-issue of the book which was first published by Little Brown in 1996 and written in 1995.

It was re-published against my express wishes as it is grossly out of date. Indeed, I have calculated that more than half the entries are now incorrect. Some brands have disappeared altogether, others would not qualify for entry in a modern book and yet others have changed their methods of production, their blending techniques and their packaging.

• New Edition of "Taste and Flavour in Olive Oil"
